Narcisse Manitoba is just over an hour away from Winnipeg and home to the world's largest snake dens where tens of thousands Red-sided Garter Snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis partietalis) emerge from the winter dens to mate.

Today was relatively cold, but I had promised the kids we'd go so I really didn't see the thousands that I had hoped for.

It was cool though!

1) The sign coming in.
2) Scenery
3) Part of a den
4) Kids trying to ditch me
5) Mating ball

Finally, we found some snakes we could catch and hold.

They are very pretty snakes... most of their tongue is red.

This was the first time Tan held a snake.... he was a little freaked.

Ty caught his by himself which was cool... though it took him a painstakingly long time, but he didn't give up. (He doesn't see very well)

And some of me and tan, he was not very comfortable with the snakes unless I was very close and "helping" him hold it.

Then the very quiet car ride home. :D

Those made me positively crave liquorice-and-banana straps.

Appears an interesting place, too :)

Edit. If this post interrupted a planned sequence, I'll delete it )

That's super cool that you've been to see them.

(I looked at your old thread on them)

Your day was better than ours by the look of it.
