While collecting tarantulas duing the 2000 ATS conference, I was in the process of digging up a tarantula burrow. Having dug down about 12" I wasn't sure which way the burrow was turning. Not wishing to entomb the spider by colapsing the burrow, I foolishly stuck my finger in the hole to see what direction it was going. It turns out I was almost at the bottom of the burrow, and I basically suck my index finger right into the mouth of an already angry spider! She of course dug into my finger with her fangs. When I fully extracted her, I could see she was about 4" in leg span, and still quite fiesty. Although the puncture wounds themselves were painful (some blood), I think it must have been a dry bite, as no other effects were felt. I did not seek any sort of medical treatment.
