Centruroides vitattus burrowing?

how common is this? i got some early this summer and they have been doing ok as far as i know, but the other day i was looking in the tank and saw some of the sand was sunk in a ways. on closer inspection i saw one of the little guys laying in wait for prey in his new burrow. anyone have any input on this?

(also my absence was dues to my moving and not having a reliable internet source. but it is good to be back on the boards )

I have around 100 c.vits right now, out of that i think around 5-12 allways burrow. i did little test and keep soil more humid no affect. Took out bark and covers leaving less hides no affect.
But i took around 20 (in ideal conditions) and continue to disturb them, now around 8 of those are borrowed
So to the best of my opinion they do it when there stressed or continually annoyed.

Hope this helps

Although Centruroides are typically known to be arboreal some have a tendency to be only semi-arboreal, as seen in C. vittatus. Last year I had a massive colony, split in two, and I didn't even bother with bark or a ton of vertical structures because I've found this species, more often than not, hiding under rocks with a little hollow that they've dug. I did give them a very strategically piled pile of lava rocks to offer vert structures and hiding places. Their substrate was made up of ground up red sandstone and coir fiber that I kept on average, between 40% & 60% RH. I did observe slight burrowing but it was not really burrowing, but rather, hollowing out of ground every here and there but nothing that appeared to be a burrow. Post some pix if you can.

I believe there are pix of the two colonies in my Gallery on my profile. I'll be putting together a new colony soon, I can't wait - I loved keeping this species. (sorry Airrick, gonna have to beat out my special hookups - we're talking pennies on the dollar)

Some do. As stated above, they are often found burrowed under rocks. In Central Texas, this is an easy way to find them. I believe a majority spend their days in burrows here. In my house cages with rocks similar to what they burrow under, many will burrow under them. Others will prefer bark. They all want a dark place to rest though.

Cents I've collected in Oklahoma City can be found hanging out in sinks, in the corner of the bathroom floor or bedroom floor, crawling across the patio, under rocks, and so on and so forth. I hope that it's warm enough for collecting next time I visit because I've got a theory to prove (shared it over a year ago on a different forum, not going to share it again until I can get set up to prove it).

ok so its not unhard of for them to burrow. my group is small now but i have at least three that look pretty gravid so with them i am hoping to increase my colony to like 80-100 in a few years time. probably buying another group of ten or so here and there to add new blood to the genetic pool. as far as scorplings with this specie do you suggest keeping them in their own little deli cups alone or would one slightly larger container be ok for a brood?

It is not unheard of, no. As far as slings goes, the photo below is my best suggestion as well as various other bark scorpion keepers. Naturally, as they get larger, you'll want to house them in something larger but it's better safe then sorry when raising slings and keep them separate.
