Tarantula Grooming

I believe I have a Aphonopelma, found in a back yard here in Escondido Ca.
It appears to be grooming itself, scraping its legs and then bring them to its mouth. Never saw that before, am I correct, is this some kind of grooming??

What is the common name for the aphonopelma??

You're absolutely right, the tarantula is grooming itself.

As for common names for US Aphonopelma, that can get a bit muddy. Have a pic?

All T's groom themselves.I would need the T full name before I could give you
it's common or I would need a pictures to ID it.There a lot of Aphonopelma's
out there.

Love watching them groom. First time I saw it, thought something was wrong. My other spiders (true spiders) bring one leg at a time to the chelicerae to clean but my T's do 2-3 on one side at a time.

Its especially cool if they groom themselves on the enclosure glass. My A. geniculata female did it this way. It was so amazing to see with detail how they do this.
They actually collect all the dirt right on their mouth part (the sucking stomach) than knock it off with their fangs.
I tried to film it but could not get a clear shot and I did not want to disturb her. I watched her for 20 minutes.

Haha, funny first-time-seeing-a-T-grooming story:

When Mackenzie and I moved in together I knew absolutely nothing about T's...no common names, no scientific names, no anatomy terms, NOTHING. So one day while he was at work, I was on my computer and I look over and see his MM P. fasciata grooming itself. I freaked out. When he got home from work, this is what I said: (note: this is embarassing given the amount I know now and feel free to laugh at me) "Your tarantula was eating its legs!"

I actually thought that he was eating his legs, Mackenzie thought it was hilarious and explained to me that he was cleaning himself. I still refer to it as eating their legs (as a joke). As far as Aphonopelma sp. common names go, you'd need a species name to get the common name.

my formosa female can spend the best part of a day going about meticulously cleaning herself. She's funny though because she goes for a bit, stops to check no one is looking, keeps going, stops, etc
