How do I find local millipedes?

Hi I live in southern California and was wondering which specific places I should look under to find millipedes. (Under rocks? Dead leaves? Etc...) You see* I want findsome wild millipedes and was wondering how I should go about that.

I'm up in Central California. I found one of mine by walking into a public restroom

Seriously though, exactly what you've said. I have found a few centipedes that way, including a pretty big one-- 3".

You can even 'bait' your yard/area around your apartment. Right in front of my stoop I have a dirt area with a 4" by 24" by 12" slab of wood on it. It butts up to a big wall of landscaping ivy. I keep the dirt there moist, and don't use any pesticides. Check it every few weeks and there's always something interesting.

In NC, I find millipedes by raking leaf litter in hardwood forests. I also find them at night in forests crawling on top of the leaves and on tree trunks. However, they are dormant here in the winter and are hard to find. Might be a different story in CA with your climate and the type of forests you have.
