OK.. SO I have heard alot of talking about the G. rosea now being called the G. porteri..

Has it been confirmed? Is that the now new name of the G. rosea?

They're still 2 distinct species. What I'm not sure of is if a certain color form of G. rosea is now G. porteri. They show in Platnicks as two separate species, both in Chile.

From my understanding the typical G. rosea is G. porteri now and the G. rosea RCF is the true G. rosea.

but I could be wrong.

Some things to note:

  • There is no such thing as Grammostola cala. Grammostola cala is the old name for Grammostola rosea.
  • Grammostola poteri was never Grammostola rosea. G.poteri was always it's own species.
  • Grammostola rosea RCF is still referred to as Grammostola rosea RCF.

Actually, G. cala was synonymised with G. rosea in 1998 by Schmidt:

  • Schmidt, G. 1998i. Die chilenischen Vogelspinnen der Gattungen Grammostola Simon, 1892, Paraphysa Simon, 1892, Euathlus Ausserer, 1875 und Thrixopelma Schmidt, 1994 (Araneae: Mygalomorphae: Theraphosidae: Theraphosinae) mit Beschreibung einer neuen Thrixoplema-Spezies. Arthropoda 6(1): 3-10. [I don't have this.]

You can know this by checking out the "In synonymy" list above the species list and below "Gen. Grammostola Simon, 1892":

G. cala Chamberlin, 1917 = G. rosea (Walckenaer, 1837) (Schmidt, 1998i: 6).

The last (bold) part is the author (Schmidt), publication (1998i) and page (6th page) where the synonymy was established. You can get the titles of the publication from the Bibliography page.

The synonymy list and the species entry tells us what are the junior synonyms of G. rosea (Citharoscelus is also a junior synonym of Grammostola):
  • G. argentinensis Strand, 1907
  • G. cala Chamberlin, 1917
  • G. spatulata (F. O. P.-Cambridge, 1897)
  • Mygale rubiginosa Nicolet, 1849
  • Citharoscelus kochii F. O. P.-Cambridge, 1899

And now im curious if the holotype of G.porteri Mello-Leitão, 1936 was in the butantan institute or not..., does anyone know where this type is/was deposited? If it was instituto butantan, then it's almost certainly gone.
