my son got a choco golden knee and a Nicaraguan curly hair for his birthday last year. i have been doing most the care for them, but there outgrowing the cage there in. looking at a 1 gallon for there next size up. my question is what kind of substrate is best for them. (using coconut fiber atm) also should i get a small hovel and maybe a fake plant for them so its more like there natural environment?

Substrate is more important - most terrestrials dig up plants or web right over them

Top soil is best- cork bark hide works great- tight fitting

without knowing Ts size can’t recommend next box size!!

I have both species that you do. You want an enclosure size 3x the leg span wide and 4x the leg span long as a start. Enough height for 1 - 1.5x leg span clearance above the substrate. Do not go too tall, as injury can occur to the T's. Keep about 2.5 inches of coco fiber substrate also.
