Hey everyone, I got back a few days ago from my trip to DR, I didn’t get to do much bug hunting but was able to snap some images while I was there during a few quick hunts. I think the tarantulas are Phormictopus cancerides but I could be wrong. I flipped a rock and found one that had just finished molting and it was so pretty! They were super common, as well as Scolopendra alternans, which I only got one photo barely because they are so fast. Trap jaw ants were everywhere! Amblypygi were very easy to find, it was super fun to see compared to here in boring old NC.

I wish all this was in my room! And yeah I was shocked to flip that rock and see that underneath!

2 orb weavers, the “Dominican Spider”, some insect that looks similar to a moth, Wulfila sp I believe, another orb weaver and a pretty Pholcidae, one of the 1 million geckos I saw, and a cute frog!

Lastly is this beautiful snake that I think is a dwarf boa? And a really pretty green lizard. So many cool things and I’m really sad I didn’t get to actually go into a jungle and really look but I am happy to have seen all these amazing animals in my short time searching! 53218783043_d83f914a03_o.jpeg 53218858699_cd7b080fb4_o.jpeg 53218986590_96806f80d0_o.jpeg

So spectacular!!! I wanted to go to Costa Rica once but my parents wouldn’t pay for it. Once of a lifetime trip for cheap never happened.

That's some phenomenal skills with a camera, man...top shelf shooting, thanks for sharing. Boards not big enough for what you'd bring back from a jungle excursion, LoL. Truly great pics.

Thank you! I’m using a Nikon D7500 and a sigma 105mm macro with a CygnusTech Diffuser.

Yeah it was so much fun, I really hope I get the opportunity to do something like this again!
snake may be Tropidophis haetianus
I think you’re right, I found 2 of them, one on the ground and one in a tree, both around a foot long, very shy snakes.

That’s a really cool place too, that sucks you weren’t able to do it :(. I was only able to do this trip because my boyfriends family handled the majority, we split the housing cost and I payed for my plane ticket. I was lucky!

Could you provide some context as to where you were finding all of the tarantulas? Like were you just wandering around the grounds of a resort; walking around in a random park flipping rocks; on an organized group trip to a nature preserve; etc.?

All of the photos- although great in quality- are zoomed in so we can't see anything about the surrounding area or how any of these things were living.

I was in Santiago De Los Cabelleros. Pretty much all of these bugs were found off the side of the road in the city in an area that was overgrown. It had lots of stones and cement brick piles in areas. Underneath some were tarantulas, Scolopendra, or Amblypygi. Trap jaw ants were everywhere you looked. The overthrown spot and road was separated by a cobblestone wall. In the wall was wandering Scolopendra, huntsman’s, flatties, and baby tarantulas in the crevices. The two largest ones I found were just wandering around, I didn’t see any burrows at all. I found one living in a big hole in the stone wall, and another large one under a big stone that had just molted. This entire area was like than 20 feet from the road and smaller than 100 feet. It was a very small area that I didn’t really get to in depth explore
