I'd say the vagans since it's larger. If it's his first T, chances are he won't want something that's super small.

+1, agreed. A juvenile is always better as a starter for a newbie than a sling.

The B. vagans won't grow as fast as the LP, but it'll be much more colourful.

I think either one would be good for him. I'd personally just decide which ones I am willing to part with and then let him know the price of each and also the pros/cons of owning them, then let him decide for himself which one he wants.
